What are immigration physicals?

Immigration physicals are required by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) for anyone applying for permanent residency or adjustment of status in the United States. They may also be required for those entering the US on an employer-sponsored visa.

Only civil surgeons approved by USCIS can perform immigration physicals. Dr. Aziz is a designated civil surgeon who’s authorized by USCIS to perform the required immigration physical you need to complete your immigration application. 

The purpose of an immigration physical is to assess your general health and safety and how it might affect public health and well-being for those living and working in the US. 

 

How do I prepare for an immigration physical?

If you have a history of tuberculosis, you must bring in proof of your prior treatment. If you’re unable to get vaccinations for medical reasons, you must provide appropriate medical documentation that indicates why.

What happens during an immigration physical?

Immigration physicals are comprehensive evaluations that focus on how your health may affect public health in the US. During your immigration physical, Dr. Aziz:

  • Performs a physical exam
  • Runs lab work to check for contagious diseases
  • Conducts a screening for tuberculosis
  • Reviews your medical and vaccination records
  • Provides any required vaccines

Depending on the results of your testing, Dr. Aziz may provide treatment for any contagious disease or perform additional testing to further assess your health and how it might affect your immigration status. 

Dr. Aziz also completes the required immigration physical paperwork once your tests and treatments are complete, which usually takes about two weeks. She seals the USCIS medical form in an envelope for you to include in your application. This envelope must remain sealed.

She provides you with a copy of the completed medical form for your own records.
